YOUTH

Farrar UMC Youth Group will meet Wednesday, February 13th @7 pm. Along with our lesson and activity, we'll have snacks/drinks to share. See you there!

"The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become." — Henry Martyn

Whew! What a busy time for all of us. Many of our youth just came off of a season of athletics and other school activities. And all of them are learning the importance of balancing their academic work with extracurricular's and hobbies. We couldn’t be more proud of all of them! When we call for their focus here within the church and reaching out to others, spreading God’s love, they are here!

Last fall we discussed options for local missions as well as future mission work in Beverley, KY. It was at that time that Shonda Hay brought the Joppa organization to our attention. Joppa is an outreach organization for the homeless in the Des Moines area. They provide meals, supplies, and resources for health, veterinary, and housing. We decided that we would begin our mission work with Joppa by baking and delivering the goods to the center. Aimee Smith, a leader in the organization, said that homemade sweet treats like cookies are especially liked by their men/women. So, we went to work! The week of March 18th, ten of our youth joined us in the church’s kitchen for a time of fellowship and baking snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, and cake cookies. The following evening, we delivered them to the center and learned even more about Joppa’s goals and ways we can continue to build our relationship with them, providing more help to the community. Our next RUSH YF meeting will be held at the Farrar UMC, April 11th @6:30 pm. Our ministry is open to all youth, grades 7-12, so spread the word – bring a friend! (May 9th will be our last regularly schedule meeting for this season, but stay tuned for summer gatherings and continued mission planning.)

For more information about our youth ministry at Farrar United Methodist Church, please contact Brent or Denise Fick at Fickdenise@aol.com or text 515-669-8590.

Wednesday evening, September 13th, the Farrar youth kicked off their first meeting of the year9 youth were present, along with pastor Dana Wimmer, and leaders Brent & Denise Fick.

The youth spent time learning more about prayer and devotions. Youth sited scripture that supported why we do a devotion, when a good time is to do them, and the environment in which they should be done. As a way to encourage the youth to start a daily devotion, Alyssa shared two examples of books she uses. One was the Upper Room, and the other was a book she'd been gifted by a friend. Denise added several examples of mobile apps they could check out for their smart phone.
Following the lesson, they all played a "minute to win it" activity with marshmallows. The youth enjoyed popcorn and candy. Denise lead the group in the closing prayer.
